What are teeth whitening methods?
1. Home whitening method
2. Office whitening method
3. Single teeth whitening method
4. Combined whitening method
What is the home whitening method?
Personalized whitening trays are prepared with the measurements taken from the patient. Determined amounts of 16% carbamide peroxide are applied into these prepared trays.
The patient is asked to wear the bleaching trays for 4-6 hours a day. Although the duration of use varies depending on the initial color of the tooth, it is recommended to use it for an average of one week.
What should be considered in home whitening?
It is important not to use whitening agents in the bleaching trays more than it is called for. Overflowing areas should be cleaned with wet fingers or a wet toothbrush. It is not recommended to eat or drink anything while the trays are in the mouth. After the trays have been in the mouth for 4-6 hours, they are removed, the teeth are brushed with toothpaste and the trays are washed with water and a brush and placed in the box.
What is the office teeth whitening method?
It is a whitening method applied by a dentist in a dental clinic. Fast results are seen in a short time. It is a suitable treatment method especially for patients who have time constraints and do not want to deal with it. The whitening agent applied to the surface of the teeth is applied by accelerating its activity with the help of a laser. The desired whiteness of the teeth is achieved.
What are the things to be considered in in-office teeth whitening treatment?
After the procedure, especially for the first 2 weeks, it is necessary to avoid colored and acidic drinks and foods such as tea, coffee, wine, cola.
What is the single tooth whitening method (internal whitening method)?
It is a treatment method applied to teeth that change color over time with root canal treatment. Access to the canal opening is provided from the filling in the tooth. The bleaching agent is placed in the accessed canal opening and the tooth is closed with a temporary filling material. It is checked at 3-day intervals until the desired whiteness is reached and the sessions are repeated if necessary.
Does single tooth (internal) whitening cause any harm to the tooth?
If the root canal filling is very well isolated, there is usually no harm.
What is combined whitening?
It includes both office and home whitening. After whitening by the dentist in the office, it is supported by home whitening for two to three days. This whitening method is applied in patients with severe discoloration, in cases where office whitening is insufficient.
What is the Mechanism of Action of Teeth Whitening?
The enamel of our teeth is transparent and permeable. The layer that gives color to our teeth is the dentin layer under the enamel. Whitening agents pass through this permeable enamel layer and lighten the color of the teeth by acting on the colored pigments in the dentin layer behind. Since they do not perform any abrasion on the surface of our teeth, they do not harm our teeth.
Are there any harm or side effects of teeth whitening?
The whitening agent used has no harm in patients with appropriate indications. Some of our patients may experience sensitivity to very hot-cold foods and beverages, even if it is minor. This condition usually disappears within 24-48 hours. It is not permanent.
